Dust Collection

The BSNE Dust Sampler and Collector

Rugged and economical, the BSNE Dust Sampler is used the world over thanks to its reliability, simplicity, and dependability.

Custom Product’s BSNE Dust Sampler is an isokinetic wind-aspirated sampler that collects 95% of airborne dust that enters the opening, regardless of wind velocity or direction. BSNEs rotate around a mounting pole to orient according to wind direction and will operate at any height above 15 centimeters. BSNEs have been deployed in extremely harsh, remote locations for periods as long as three years, and have remained operational with very little maintenance.

Three to five BSNEs can be mounted on a single pole to collect vertical distribution data. This multiple height data can mathematically describe the vertical distribution of airborne dust, as well as determine the total quantity of dust being transported at the location. From the total transport, erosion or deposition can be computed. Although durable and powerful, BSNEs require no external power source of any kind.

The BSNE sampler is widely used in the USA as well as on every continent. It has become widely accepted as the standard sampling method for collecting airborne dust.

“The most recommendable sampler for field measurements is the BSNE, because its efficiency varies only very slightly with wind speed” –Wind tunnel and field calibration of six Aeolian dust samplers, David Goossens, Z.Y. Offer

“BSNE delivers the best performance” — A Wind Tunnel Study of Twelve Dust Samplers by Large Particle Size, Shannak, B.  Corsmeier, U.  Kottmeir, Ch.  Al-azab, T.  (2014)

Triple BSNE Dust Sampler

Three BSNE Dust Samplers stacked to collect at fixed heights.

The versatile Triple BSNE provides a reliable method for sampling a broad range of particle sizes at different elevations, all with the same dependable and simple operation utilized by the standard BSNE.

The Triple BSNE Dust Sampler typically collects airborne dust at fixed heights of 5, 10, and 20 centimeters above the soil surface, but these increments can be adjusted to meet your specific requirements. The Triple BSNE sampler consists of two Modified BSNE’s and one Standard BSNE fastened together and mounted on a single tail assembly.

The Modified BSNE sampler is similar to our Standard BSNE in much of its operation, but its slimmer construction and side exhaust ports allow it to be stacked closer together for a tighter profile (in 5cm increments). These samplers are 1/3 the height of a Standard BSNE, and their sampling opening is only 1/5 the size. Modified BSNEs are normally used in conjunction with Standard BSNEs, but can be deployed as an independent sampler if desired. Please note that if Modified BSNEs are to be deployed independently they require a special tail assembly to mount and rotate on 1/2″ pole.

Triple BSNE’s may be used in conjunction with several Standard BSNE samplers on the same pole to obtain vertical distribution data and allow simultaneous sampling at up to seven different elevations.

Remote Weather Stations

Versatile mounting system for wind and weather data collectors.

Remote Weather Stations deployed in the Mongolian Desert in Northern China.

Custom Products Remote Weather Station allows the operator to set-up a fully wired, functional weather station in under 30 minutes. Typically, a station consists of four anemometers, sensors to record wind direction, air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and solar radiation; a data logger is used to record data from the Weather Station and can be powered via solar panel and battery backup. Compatible sensors are wide ranging, depending on user objective, these may include a Sensit for detecting sand movement. Wire is ran inside of the steel frame of the stations, protecting it from the elements and wildlife. Custom Products Remote Weather Stations are shipped calibrated, tested, and ready for deployment.

The “H” frame design allows installation on sloping sand dunes or uneven surfaces. The Remote Weather Station and instrument package have remained operational through conditions including -300 F temperatures, 60 mph winds, three feet of snow, 30” of water, and 33 severe dust storms. These rugged units allow continuous acquisition of broad ranges of data in almost any setting.

Custom Products Remote Weather is constructed to minimize wire exposure to elements and wildlife, almost all of its wiring is housed inside of its steel pipe frame.

A wide range of sensors can incorporated into the Remote Weather Station. Some commonly used data acquisition sensors include anemometers, wind directional , rain fall, temperature and humidity, as well as the Sensit. These units are shipped with all instrumentation pre wired and tested before leaving the factory. Custom Products Remote Weather Station design minimizes set up time.

Aeolian Dust Collector

Rugged dust sampler to measure airborn dust accumulation on flat surfaces

Aeolian Samplers collect fine material as it settles out of the air.  These units are ideal for measuring levels of accumulation on flat surfaces in fairly calm locations such as solar panels.

These samplers sit atop mounting poles, which are cut to buyer-specified lengths.

Like the BSNE, they require no external power source and are extremely rugged, making them a reliable, low maintenance dust sampling option.

The sampler’s screen can be removed from its mounting pole, making sample collection and cleaning simple and easy.

Sensit Salination Sensors

Often deployed in conjunction with BSNE Dust Samplers, the Sensit sensors are are low maintenance for measuring wind erosion that provides high resolution particle movement.

Sensit H14-LIN

Sensit has released the latest version of its saltation sensor, the new H14-LIN. This updated model provides the standard data outputs of KE (kinetic energy) and PC (particle counts) compatible with the original Sensit(tm) model H11B sensor.  The new H14-LIN model now includes a detailed energy per impact output (PHA data) providing the energy spectrum as a result of every individual particle impact. Note: A pulse height analyzer (PHA) is required. Sensit is working on a PHA module to acquire this large amount of data.

FP5-RevC Flat Plate Sensit

The flat plate (FP) sensor provides the same PC pules output as previous Sensit models H11B & H11Cf, except this sensor’s pulse width is a precision 1mS and is not temperature sensitive. It also has a blue LED that provides a flash with every impact. The LED is visible via a small hole in the side of the sensor case and serves several valuable functions.
